Top Tips for Spreading Holiday Cheer in Senior Living

The holidays are an exciting and joyful time of year, encouraging families to decorate their homes and prepare for another busy season with its cherished traditions. If this is the first year a family member is spending the holiday season in senior living, the festivities may look a bit different, but they can still be just as enjoyable.

At The Village at Woods Edge, we help our residents maintain their beloved traditions and bring the comforts of home to their new living spaces. Learn a few ways you can keep the holiday spirit alive in senior living and get ready for another cheerful year celebrating with friends and family.

Deck the Halls!

One of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit is to infuse your personal space with reminders of the upcoming holidays. You can furnish and decorate your private Independent Living apartment or cottage according to your unique tastes and preferences. Raise the holiday cheer by adorning your apartment with garlands, colored string lights, or a small ornamented tree.

You can also ask a family member to bring decorations that hold sentimental value, such as homemade ornaments or an heirloom tree topper passed down through generations. As the holiday cards and photographs arrive in the mail, designate a space in your home to put them on display. This can further personalize your holiday decor and help you feel more connected to your loved ones.

Decorating shared community spaces with other residents can also boost your holiday spirit. In the past, we've displayed up to 30 decorated trees throughout our main campus buildings, immersing our residents in holiday ambience, no matter where they go. Gather a group of friends, and crank up the holiday music for an enthusiastic afternoon transforming your community into a festive wonderland and creating new meaningful traditions.

Plan a Family Gathering

For many people, the season may feel incomplete if they can't enjoy homemade food during family holiday dinners. Being in senior living doesn't mean you have to sacrifice quality time indulging in tasty holiday dishes with your family. In fact, just the opposite! You can take advantage of our private dining space and invite your family for a homestyle holiday meal without the pressure of having to prepare it yourself.

Dining at our restaurant, The Back Porch & Grille, has become a holiday tradition for many residents and locals. Serving classic American fare and Southern comfort food, the restaurant has hosted annual holiday parties for families, friend groups, and coworkers, and we accept reservation requests to ensure you get your preferred date and time.

The restaurant offers a holiday menu to make the occasion feel extra special. Holiday meals are a great time to gather the most important people in your life to reminisce about past family happenings and create new memories you'll cherish for years to come. By letting us cook for you, you'll have even more leisure time to do exactly that. Check out the holiday menu here!

Host Family or Friends in a Guest Apartment

The holiday season is one of the busiest times for traveling as people set off to reconnect with loved ones they only get to see a handful of times per year. Many people transition to senior living to downsize their homes and may not think they have the space to host traveling family members. However, our community offers guest apartments for visiting family or friends, so they don't have to worry about finding local accommodations.

Our guest apartments enable loved ones who don't live nearby to visit and enjoy holiday activities with you in person. You can invite them to help decorate your apartment, raising the festive cheer for the season ahead, or host them closer to the holidays for a gift exchange or dinner party. Franklin, Virginia, also holds its share of holiday events, including the Christmas parade and Christmas tree-lighting event, which you and your guests can attend together.

The holiday season is one of our busiest times of year, with family-friendly holiday concerts, tree-lighting activities, breakfast with Santa events, and other themed parties and off-site excursions. These activities are even more meaningful when your loved ones are there to enjoy them with you.
